Meshtastic is an open-source, off-grid communication system built around small LoRa radios. These devices can send text messages, location updates, and basic telemetry without needing cell service, Wi-Fi, or a traditional internet connection.
Instead of every radio needing to reach one central tower, nearby radios pass messages along for each other. That creates a mesh network, where coverage gets stronger as more people add well-placed nodes around town, on rooftops, in vehicles, or anywhere with a good view of the surrounding area.
Right now, Montana Mesh is a volunteer-led project focused on building a stronger Meshtastic network in and around Billings, with hopes of improving coverage toward the Heights, Laurel, and nearby communities.
The project depends on people donating their time, equipment, installation help, site access, and local knowledge. Every node, contact, and shared location helps make the mesh more useful for everyone.
Our goal is to build a reliable Meshtastic presence across Montana's major cities. Over time, we hope those city networks can be linked through MQTT where appropriate, creating options for both local communication and broader statewide coordination during emergencies.
